BookZen is a book design and illustration studio in Chennai working with authors, publishing houses, educational publishers and creative agencies across several continents. We handle the visual side of a book — the cover that has to compete as a thumbnail, the interior that has to stay readable for three hundred pages, and the artwork in between.

The markets we work in

Publishing rules are not the same everywhere. Trim sizes, paper weights, retailer requirements and even how a reader browses a shelf change from one market to the next, and a book has to be built for the one it is going to.

Most of our work comes from seven markets, and we keep current specifications for each of them so a file never comes back rejected. Whether you are printing through Amazon KDP in the United States, IngramSpark in Australia, or an offset printer in Chennai or Dubai, we build to that printer's own template rather than to a generic default.

What a project actually looks like

Design goes wrong most often when nobody agreed what finished means. So we fix that at the start rather than at the end.

Every project begins with a written brief covering your genre, audience, comparable titles, printer, trim size, deadline and budget. From that we send back a scope with a fixed number of concepts, a fixed number of revision rounds and a delivery date. Nothing starts until you have approved it, and the price does not move unless the scope does.

During the project you see work at the stages where feedback still changes something cheaply: thumbnails before roughs, roughs before finished art, a proof PDF before press files. You own the final artwork outright once the project is paid, and we hand over the layered source files rather than flattened exports, so you are never locked into coming back to us.

The studio is in Chennai, India, and every project runs remotely. Briefs, reviews and file handover all happen online, and we schedule calls to suit your time zone. Most of our clients are in North America, Europe, Australia and the Gulf, and we have never needed a client to be in the same room.

Most of our work comes from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and India, and we also take projects from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore and the Czech Republic. We quote in your currency and build files to your local printer's specification.

Yes. Full commercial rights to the final artwork transfer to you once the project is paid in full, and we hand over the layered source files as well as the finished ones. Where licensed stock or a licensed typeface is used in a design, we tell you before it goes into the file and pass on the licence details.

A cover usually runs two to three weeks from brief to final files. A full interior layout depends on length and complexity, typically two to four weeks for a straightforward novel and longer for illustrated or academic titles. Illustration sets are quoted per image count. We confirm a date in the scope before work starts.

Pricing depends on the scope: page count, image count, the number of concepts and whether you need print files as well as digital. We quote a fixed price per project rather than an hourly rate, so the figure in the scope is the figure you pay unless you change the brief.

For a cover: your title, author name, genre, a short synopsis, your printer or platform, and any covers you admire. For an interior: the final edited manuscript and your trim size. For illustration: a script or brief and a rough idea of how many images you need. If you are not sure yet, send what you have and we will tell you what is missing.

Often, yes. Send us the existing files and tell us what is wrong with them. If the source files are editable we can usually take over; if they are flattened exports we will say so honestly and quote for rebuilding rather than pretending to patch them.
