Illustration work goes wrong when the first thing an author sees is a finished painting. By then, changing the composition means starting again.
We work in stages so decisions get made while they are still cheap to change. You approve thumbnails, then pencil roughs, then a colour test on one image, and only then do we produce final art for the full set. Character sheets are locked before any scene work starts, so a character looks the same on page six and page forty.
