A good interior is invisible. Nobody finishes a novel and praises the leading, but bad spacing, inconsistent chapter openers and broken widows make a book feel amateur immediately.
We set a typographic system first: a text face, a measure, a baseline grid and a chapter opener pattern. Everything else follows from that. Front matter, running heads, folios, part titles and back matter all get fixed rules, so a 400-page manuscript stays consistent from the copyright page to the index.
